The Staples Your Office Wardrobe Needs STAT
You’ve been in back-to-back meetings all week and then on a conference call until 2am. Coffee in hand, you stare blankly at your wardrobe. Your poor brain has nothing left to give, let alone click into sartorial-slayer mode to come up with a kickass, work appropriate outfit…
The Wardrobe Foundation
…enter your go-tos: the foundation of your wardrobe, a perfect mix of staples from two or three of your favourite brands. You have one of every colour/style/fabric because they fit you to a T, you get loads of compliments, & you always walk with a little extra swagger & purpose when you wear them.
Most of my workwear “go-tos” are from Everlane. It is (IMHO) the last word on luxurious, classic and long-lasting staples. The silk tops, in particular, are a godsend: the delicate material creates a feminine silhouette when bloused with a pencil skirt or cigarette trousers and the material isn’t too thin to feel cheap.
Pair an Everlane silk top with almost anything, et voila: in an instant you’ll have yourself an effortlessly put together look without even turning your noggin on. And, you’ll be primed to kick some office butt. Just think how much extra time you’ll be able to bill 😉
It Gets Better
Everlane takes an ethical approach to sourcing but also offers a pleasing (and transparent) price tag. You can get a breakdown of the cost of materials, labor, duties and the mark-up for each garment as against comparable retailers. Cool, huh? It also publishes information about its Hangzhou, China factory, complete with photos of the factory’s workers and the interior.
Here are my top 4 picks to start your perfect office wardrobe
1. This sleeveless silk (100 percent crepe de chine) camisole is understated & luxurious all at once – blouse with a colourful pencil skirt or channel Gucci and Dior and and wear over a pleated skirt.
2. You can never have too many white silk shirts. It’s the be-all-and-end-all of staples because it’s versatile & flattering: wear to the office with a suit or with jeans to a weekend BBQ. For top marks, tuck in only a small section of the shirt at the front. Parfait.
3. Silk camisole + tailored trousers + statement fitted blazer = perfection. Buuuut, beware the gape when leaning over the negotiating table. Maybe save this one for Friday night drinks.
4. This is how to wear the oversized trend to the office! With a full-length back zipper to boot: no one’s gonna mess wich u.
