The Perfect Workout For Busy Working Women in Sydney
Calling all time poor, workaholic, all-or-nothing types like me! Your search for a satisfying & sustainable exercise regime is over. Combining strength, yoga and cardio, Flow Athletic Sydney offers a new fitness & health formula so you can say “Adios” to that old gym slog.
The Flow Philosophy – Ben Lucas – Kate Kendall
Yoga? Pfffft. The only way to really drop those pasta/vino/brownie-induced kilos and tone up is to pound the pavement for hours on end, right? My thoughts exactly. That is, until I discovered Flow Athletic. You won’t find rows of treadmills and cross-trainers at this gym. No way, Jose.
Founded by top yoga teacher Kate Kendall (who I wrote about here) and Ben “Benny” Lucas, the ever-smiley ex-National Rugby League super star, Flow Athletic offers an elegant combination of fitness, strength and yoga.
In 2014 Ben was training for an ultra marathon and incorporated into his regime regular yoga classes with Kate. This new addition to his existing strength and cardio routine started to pay off, with Ben and Kate noticing significant improvements in his recovery and performance. Et voila, Flow Athletic was born.
Flow Athletic’s divine 1:1:1 ratio
1 Strength/Barre session
1 Cardio session (Spin/Boxing/Run)
1 Yoga session
This approach not only gives our clients the best results with the least chance of injury, but lends itself to greater longevity to the program, both physically and mentally. Kate Kendall & Ben Lucas
Time Saving Classes
Flow Athletic offers unique 30 minute “Rapid” classes where, like a Choose Your Own Adventure book, you devise your own combination of yoga, strength and fitness. Scheduled at convenient times, these sessions are perfect for busy working bodies.
My favourite class is Bike-Asana: a grueling spin sweat sesh followed by half an hour of yoga and stretching. I wouldn’t say the post-spin yoga class is easy, but it does let me slowly catch my breath, stretch out my poor little leg muscles, and give my mind time to settle into a less monkey-brain state. With body pumped and mind centred, I’m ready to rock n’ roll (and kick some corporate butt.) Even if you are on a telecom all night with London, you won’t regret getting out of bed for this class. If you do, I will eat my hat.
Dog Friendly & Community Oriented
Is your social life suffering because of a hectic work schedule? Well, your dog’s probably is too. Solution: bring le pup to your next Flow Athletic workout so he can hang out with Wilbur, the Flow Athletic spaniel. With his own Instagram account (@wilburthespaniel) and guest appearances on Channel 7’s Sunrise Wilbur’s celebrity probably eclipses both Kate and Ben’s combined. You will also find Wilbur perfecting is downward dog at Flow Athletic’s puppy yoga classes (Puppy-Asana). Woof, indeed.
Both Ben and Kate are passionate about Flow Athletic’s contribution to and involvement in the local Sydney community. As of March 2016, through initiatives including yoga classes for men (Broga), the famous Flow After Dark Silent Yoga Disco, and the signature 30 Days Clean program (see below), Flow Athletic had raised $100,000 for BeyondBlue.
30 Days CLEAN: lose weight – tone up – detox – energise
30 Days Clean is a community project run twice a year by Flow Athletic (February & August). For 30 days you will be eating “clean”, so that’s no processed foods, no alcohol and no caffeine. Gawd, help us all. You are encouraged to attend three Flow Athletic classes per week as well as special events designed to help you reach your wellness goals. These have included cooking classes with uber-cool nutritionist Lola Berry and panel discussions with industry experts such as National Rugby League player Greg Inglis, the gorgeous Bianca Cheah of health blog Sportluxe, and the Daily Edition’s Sally Obermeder.
It’s Time To Get Off the Couch
I am THE WORST morning person, so the fact that I can make it to the early morning Flow Athletic classes speaks volumes. I also really enjoy just being there: the décor and fit wouldn’t be out of place in the pages of a Scandi design magazine. It’s also kind on your nostrils being devoid of the sweaty/smelly/gross characteristics of most other gyms.
Ladies, your winter hibernation is over. The mornings are getting warmer and the days longer so there’s no excuse not to pull your sorry butts out of bed in the morning for a workout. Bed still looking inviting? How about I throw in the added benefits of post sweat-sesh mental clarity and increased energy levels. You’ll be dominating those board meetings in no time. Plus, you can feel smug as a bug all day long. Go for it!
