Work can be friggin’ full on. It’s Friday afternoon, you haven’t slept much for three days. Five ‘urgent’ requests just appeared in your inbox. You’ve missed three calls from your boss and the guy at reception can’t find you a meeting room for an important Monday morning telecon. Suddenly, a vaguely familiar bloke from accounting appears at your desk demanding an explanation about some executive summary you’ve never laid eyes on. 15-minutes later he realises he’s barking at the wrong person.
During hectic and stressful times like this, I seek refuge for a few moments in the closest stairwell. I lean against the wall and focus on my breathing.
Inhaaaale, exhaaale. Inhaaaale, exhaaale.
That’s all I need.
Slowly the seemingly endless train of thoughts slows down to a manageable hum and the level of cortisol coursing through my veins settles.
Sometimes escaping the daily grind and switching off is the best thing to do. It helps you to re-focus by taking your body out of ‘fight or flight’ mode. Plus taking timeouts has been shown to decrease stress and increase creativity. I can’t recommend it enough.
Kelly Cutrone, founder of People’s Revolution, Whitney’s boss in The City (man I loved that show) and a judge on ANTM – welcome back Tyra – suggests the best thing to do in these situations, particularly if you’re on the brink of tears, is to go outside or find a place to collect and re-center yourself.
If there’s no stairwell close-by and it’s raining outside, head to the loo.
Even better, take your phone with you (to the loo?) and try a little Instagram surfing. It’s oddly satisfying and if anyone spies you, they’ll probably assume you’re working. In my eyes, an aimless scroll through Instagram is a perfectly acceptable meditative practice. That is unless you’re trying to quit social media…
Today, I indulged in an Insta-binge of my own. Mostly I just chuckled at the dog LOLs, but a few times I caught myself actually LOL’ing thanks to @RebelWilson and @KanyeDoingThings.
Here are a few gems.
