How To Wear A Classic Striped Breton Tee To The Office
Bonjour mon chéris! The striped Breton top is the epitome of French style offering a minimalist, elegant, classic and effortlessly put together look.
Although Clémence Poésy, Kouign-amann pastry (step aside croissant) and Sézane rate highly on my This-Is-Awesome-I-Want-To-Be-French spectrum, I’d wager the Breton top is one of the greatest* French exports of all time. Hailing from Brittany in Nothern France, this top was originally adorned with 21 stripes to correspond with the number of Napoleon’s victories. Who knew?!
I’m so devoted to this sartorial niche that I have dedicated an entire drawer to the cause. Chinti & Parker and Petit Bateau are my go-tos, but over the years I have also discovered great options at COS, Scotch & Soda, GAP and Whistles. Last year I was so excited to discover number 5 (see image) at COS that I bought six: two for me, two for my Mum and two for my sister.
The Breton top’s natural companion is jeans. Any jeans whatsoever. Complete the outfit with a streamlined, tailored dark blazer and heels for your weekend stroll to the boulangerie. (Yes, heels).
Are you, like me, a hopeless francophile mesmerised by all things French?
*Who am I kidding? It’s clearly champagne.
